Hi -

I've noticed that the scons-configure-cache command lets you select a
prefix length for the directories in the cache.

When is it necessary/advantageous to select a higher number than the
default of 2? What is the intended usage of this tool?

Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew,

Initially it was only 1 and this lead to directories with a high number of
files/directories.
Especially on windows (but this affects other OS's to some degree), this
cause filesystem slow downs.

So in theory a higher number would have some advantages, though no one has
taken the time to quantify anything other than 2 was significantly better
than 1.

Hope that helps!
